Week 23 — 19 November 2021

As marketing stunts go, this one has the faint whiff of overreach about it. We applaud the image of red sauce having transcended the gravitational pull of our beloved blue dot, but that's an easy photoshop job. Marz Edition ketchup!? Come on! Who are they kidding? The marketing spiel says the science bods at Heinz have developed lab techniques for tomatoes to grow in similar conditions to those on the Mars and they've harvested tomatoes tasty enough to make their ketchup with. If they think we're buying this gimmickry they must be on another (red) planet.

Judging a book by it's cover! ➜

There was a time, before beer cans and album covers, where a graphic designers greatest gig would have been a book cover. And perhaps the pinnacle of all book jackets, the greatest literary chart toppers, are Penguin's Modern Classics. Here, Henry Eliot, who's authoring his second book on the subject, talks about the simple elegance and subtle cleverness behind some of the covers.

Apple says yay to DIY! ➜

With the focus firmly fixed on the climate and reducing our collective craving for (over) consumption, it was great to see Apple announce it's making some genuine parts, components and tools available to customers who want to repair products themselves, rather than replace them. For anyone that's had to endure the wait time and expense of having anything repaired by Apple under the current regime, it should be a blessed relief. Through a wider lens though, Apple is improving the durability, longevity, and increasing the repairability of its products. In doing so, they might be zeitgeist surfing, but hey, if people and planet win, we're good with that.

Digital wardrobe makeover? ➜

I would stay in tonight, but I haven't got a stitch to wear... If Morrissey had experienced the metaverse, The Smiths back catalogue could've been a very different affair. Anyway, leaving Bigmouth to one side, (as we should) it seems there is now absolutely no excuse for parading around the digital realm without being dressed to impress. From in-game skins, to retrospectively imposed 3d dresses, this multi-billion dollar creative industry is only set to grow. Suits you!
