Week 26 — 10 December 2021

Ever fancied yourself as a bit of a creative? Reckon you can craft a captivating brand logo? Or come up with a tagline to outdo ‘Just do it’? Well, Squadhelp could be the place for you to flex your creative pecs and bag some bunce in the process. Once you've signed up as a creative (and paid the $10 fee) you'll be tagged into competitions where aspiring businesses post briefs for their naming, tagline and logo requirements. If your name, copy or design is selected, the rewards, my friend, are all yours. Less, Squadhelp's commission cut obvs. Come and have a go, if you think you're hard/creative enough.

Lush leaves social media ➜

This is an insightful and comprehensive unpacking of Lush’s decision to close down it's social media channels. In an age where profit usually crushes purpose, it's refreshingly bold to see a global brand truly playing out its values. As the article outlines, they'll have done the math(s) and the decision here won't be without cost to the retailer. Lush CEO, Mark Constantine, says he is "happy to lose $10m by quitting Facebook". Conversely though, for such an ethically driven business, to act on it's core principles and remove itself from platforms which it feels are becoming increasingly harmful and toxic, is a huge brand win. Will others follow suit? Watch this space.

Brace for impact – earths black box ➜

When airplanes crash, often the only surviving thing is the practically indestructible black box – the device which records the crafts vital data in the events leading up to catastrophe. Now, in perhaps the gloomiest briefing any agency has undertaken, Clemenger BBDO, The Glue Society with the University of Tasmania are creating a black box for earth. It’s location is undisclosed, and as you can see, it's not black and it's not a box, but it makes the powerful statement that it is very much recording the progress of our own demise. Taking hundreds of live environmental data streams it will document and store the atmospheric and environmental status of the planet as we proceed, seemingly unstoppably, into a doomsday nosedive. For who exactly though, we’re not entirely sure.
