Week 16 — 1 October 2021

We're not quite sure why it took 50 people to make this idea a reality, but it absolutely did (we checked the creative credits). Also not sure why or how the Australian in the chair was selected but he obviously really likes eating and talking about Cadburys Caramilk. We suspect his summation of the confection, which like the man himself, will be winging its way to UK shores, would have been something along the lines of "Bonza mate!" "Ripper mate!"and "Can you stop effin throwin things at me mate!”

Volvo unveils rebland ➜

At a design agency, it feels like a god-given right to be uber-critical when high profile rebrands are unveiled. So, as one of the world's leading car manufacturers launched their new look brand this week, we sat poised, with cutting critiques at the ready. Then Volvo unveiled this! No denying it was time for a redesign, but an undesign? We get the logic behind visual clarity and simplification but it lacks balance, impact and well, anything really. It has captured one of the pillars of the brand though. It is really safe.

Design icon ruined ➜

More bad news for good design fans as an iconic brand marque is bastardised. The classic British Rail logo, created originally by Gerry Barney in 1964, which has stoically kite-marked our railway misadventures for decades, is being modernised. Proposals by transport chiefs to update and recolour his creation have not been warmly welcomed by the designer. "It's a load of old bollocks!" he quite rightly suggests.

Squad goals ➜

We could have called this link Teamwork makes the Dream Work, but that would have been profoundly uncool. Why? Cause squads, not teams, are where it's at right now. And this InVision documentary about the smartest squads, creating the best products, for the fastest growing companies, in the shortest time possible – is an interesting and insightful watch. 40 minuter though, so maybe one to digest with lunch.
