Week 18 — 15 October 2021

Browsing the web sometimes feels like an unending battle against baffling site design. However, occasionally what feels like infuriatingly bad design, may in fact have tipped over into something more sinister. If you've ever been faced with a web form that feels duplicitous, or asked to confirm an option to proceed – where there is no real option – just a singular action worded differently, then you have likely already experienced dark patterns. These UI/UX tricks are underhand at best, insulting and illegal at worst – but at least now culprits can expect to find their shady actions reported to a dark patterns hall of shame.

Brilliant branding alert! ➜

Creative kudos klaxon! This beautifully considered and immaculately executed branding project for Brooklyn Oyster and Chop House, Gage and Tollner (by New York agency Order) had us hat-doffing their genius. A simple idea, to revisit and revive what came before, but researched so painstakingly and brought to life with care, craft and ingenuity – bagging the creative team a top night out in the process too. As usual, the devil is in the detail. Click the link and keep on scrolling.

I wish I was a little bit taller! ➜

Let's admit it. We all wish we were ballers. But now designers and artists are being deployed to help increase the uplift in participation in basketball in the UK. As a sport, it's already witnessing a steady rise in popularity, but Project in the Paint is looking to accelerate that, by transforming otherwise bland community courts into vibrant and immersive works of art. So now the court is a canvas! Let's play ball!

Vidyard ➜

Now that we've all become slightly more accustomed to video calls, learning in the process to stomach the challenging act of looking at our own faces while we speak, perhaps the time is now right for Vidyard. This great (and free) Chrome extension lets you create and send professional presenter videos quickly and easily. Perfect for quick explainer screen shares, or internal briefings or even full sales pitch decks. Ideal for showing, rather than telling folk, how your products and processes work.
