Week 3 — 2 July 2021

As more consumers embrace brands that put planet before profit, the battle for Big Fashion to improve it's sustainability creds is hotter than ever. Nike seems to have taken it to the (air) max with their latest collection made from Piñatex – a plant-based alternative to leather crafted from otherwise unused parts of pineapple. Just don't be putting them on top of your pizza!

Ryan Reynolds makes us sick ➜

So, Maximum Effort, the marketing agency Ryan co-founded in 2018 has sold to MNTN, but that's not why we're irked. The agency is a creative hotbed and some of their slots, like this Fathers Day ad for Aviation gin (which, by the way, he also co-owned and recently sold to Diageo for $600m) were simply brilliant. But Ryan, can you please stop making everything look so damn effortless?

Womxn in design ➜

In what is a widely male-dominated industry, Female Design Council (FDC) is a "professional community body for all womxn irrespective of color, race, gender or sexual identity in the design industry." It's equity, diversity and inclusion mission is to create opportunities for underrepresented creatives to join the global design conversation. Fair play to that we say. Even if we can't pronounce womxn.

Skittles recolour the rainbow ➜

A strong positioning play to coincide with Pride, from Skittles who has removed all colour from it's iconic branding, rationalising: "During Pride, only one rainbow deserves to be seen." In unity with LGBTQ+ community they've also recoloured previously black and white archive footage and images showing seminal moments in Pride history. It's a great campaign and we agree, Pride should always be full colour.

Marketing to Gen Z ➜

To catch us all up, GenZers are the young tech savvy, socially-minded, most racially and ethnically diverse cohort of our population, born in the late 90's onwards, with a reported spending power of over $140billion. Here's some solid guidance on what they expect from marketers.

The Euros ➜ BBCWith the win over arch rivals Germany, momentum is building for Gareth's workmanlike England. But do we dare to dream? Of course we do. Whisper it quietly...it's coming home.

Somebody Feed Phil ➜ NetflixThe oddly likeable Phil Rosenthal takes us on a global culinary adventure. Like a street version of Bake Off, it leaves you feeling good, but hungry.

NTS Radio ➜

With studios in Ancoats, Manchester, NTS has an eclectic and leftfield pull. And it's currently giving 6Music a run for its money as the daily station of choice among Drumbeaters.

Athletico Mince ➜
Bob and Andy

Bob Mortimer and Andy Dawsons (once loosely football related) podcast has had us chuckling since 2016. It's rambling Mackem nonsense, but 100% hilario.
